This is Day 6 of my vacation, Sunday November 4, 2001. It has been a few days since I started coming down with a cold. I woke yesterday with a bit of a fever, headache and sore throat. I woke this morning with a bit of a sore throat, and as far as I can tell, no fever. This is an improvement. I went to bed last night about 10 PM Ohio time, and was sound asleep by 11 PM Ohio time. I woke this morning at 5:45 AM Ohio time - I don't want to know what time that is here in Utah. I started to roll over and go back to sleep, but figured, what the heck - I've had almost 7 hours of sleep, which is more than I get at home, so I might as well get up and wander around town. It wasn't pitch dark out - the moon was real bright when it wasn't behind the clouds. I told about 70 pictures this morning, and I'm going to put just a few of them up here real quick - more to come when I get home. The first one is something you probably won't appreciate - sunrise over a hydraulic excavator. I know, not everyone thinks a picture of sunrise over a piece of hydraulically operated equipment is worth taking a picture of, but it sure struck a chord with me.
I guess it was around 6 AM when I started wandering around town. I walked down to the football field, over to the Chevron station, and generally scoped out the places I thought would give the best views when the sun actually started to rise. I probably took 20 or 30 pictures in the first 90 minutes that I wandered around town. After finding what I thought was the best spot (down by the milk distributing company and the butcher shop) I got ready to take some really great pictures - like this one:
I learned a lesson this morning - when you use a digital camera, ALWAYS carry spare batteries. Especially when the pictures you want to take are a 20 minute walk from the motel. I got that picture, and then the camera told me it needed more batteries before it would take any more. So I hoofed it back to the motel to get another set of batteries. Good for my cardiovascular conditioning. Not-so-good for my attempts to capture the perfect picture of sunrise over Kanab (although I got a few that are REAL close to perfect). Ahhh...new batteries - and it doesn't look like I missed much. This is an awfully nice picture, isn't it?
I was over by "No Name Circle" and happened to look down. No Name Circle is a dirt street on the eastern edge of Kanab, and the hill in the picture above is just past No Name Circle. When I looked down, I thought I saw deer tracks on top of the tire tracks. What do you think - do they look like deer tracks to you?
Actually, I'm positive they are deer tracks, because when I was talking to Curt (that's him below with his dog, River), one of the first things he asked me was whether or not I'd seen the deer. Curt cuts and sells firewood for a living. As I was walking around town, you could smell that a LOT of folks heat their houses with firewood. I guess Curt has a booming business.
This next picture is looking west. If you look real close, you can see the moon about in the center of the picture. These are some pretty nice pictures, but (like the rest of the pictures I've taken) they don't come close to doing justice to the actual view.
That's it for now. When I get back home I'll add in some more pictures and also put in some links to larger versions of the pictures. |
