I don't suppose you'll settle for "because," will you?
How about "because Doug Henning might have thought it was a good idea?" You remember Doug Henning, don't you? The magician who was so popular in the 70's and 80's?
I once heard Doug say something like this:
|
"When I'm first learning a new trick, it feels very awkward.
"After I've practiced the trick several hundred times, it starts to feel comfortable.
"When I've practiced the trick two or three thousand times, it begins to be a habit.
"When I've practiced the trick five or six thousand times, it starts to feel effortless.
"And when I've practiced the trick nine or ten thousand times, ahhhhh - that's when the magic starts."

Improving at soccer is a lot like learning to do magic. If you want to feel comfortable while you're dribbling the ball down the field, you probably should practice dribbling hundreds and hundreds of times.
If you want to make a habit of shooting the ball into the the net from half field, you might have to practice that shot a few thousand times.
And if you'd like to make your traps, your passes, and your fakes all seem effortless and appear to be as magical as one of Doug Hennings illusions, then you're probably looking at practicing those skills as often as Doug used to practice his magic tricks.
I know, I can hear you now.... you're saying "but I play soccer two (or three, or four) times a week. I get all the practice I need during the games."
But do you really?
