The team with a bad plan has an advantage over a team with no plan.

Session Outlines

Week 2 - Primary focus is on trapping, dribbling and passing. If time allows, work on showing to the ball and talk about goal-side and ball-side.

0:00 - 0:02

Warm Up - Top of the Ball, 100 touches.

Benefits: Increase body temperature, improved feel for and control of soccer ball, some conditioning.

Description: Put your soccer ball on the ground in front of you. Jog in place, alternately touching the ball of each foot to the top of your soccer ball. Start out slow and gradually increase speed.

0:03 - 0:05

Warm Up - Side to Side, 100 touches

Description: Put your soccer ball on the ground between your feet. Jog in place, tapping the ball back and forth between your feet. Long term goal is to touch the ball each time a foot touches the ground.

0:06 - 0:10

Warm Up - Jog while Dribbling

Description: Jog from one touch line to the other while dribbling. Try to take no more than three steps between touches on the ball and also try to alternate feet when touching the ball. Long term goal is to touch the ball each time a foot touches the ground.

0:11 - 0:17

Warm-Up - Dribble using "Fingers of the Feet"

Description: Start where the halfline meets the touch line and dribble along the halfline towards the far side of the field. When you start, dribble with only your right foot.

As you dribble, use the inside of your right foot to touch the ball to the left side of the half line. With your next touch, use the outside of your right foot to touch the ball to the right side of the half line. Continue along the half line, using your right foot to touch the ball from one side of the half line to the other.

When you reach the far touch line, turn, follow the touch line, and begin using your left foot to move the ball from one side of the line to the other.

When you reach the goal line, follow it and guide the ball with your right foot. Turn at the penalty box and follow it so you don't have to dribble through the goalpost.

When you reach the touch line, turn and follow it to the half line, once again guiding the ball with your left foot. Long term goal is to touch the ball each time your plant foot touches the ground.

0:18 - 0:26

Dribble in Straight Line

Description: This one is a bit more difficult than it looks - you need to close your eyes to make it happen right.

Break into groups of three. Each group needs one soccer ball and two cones (I will provide the cones). Set one cone on the touch line, approximately 10' from any other groups' cones. Set second cone in field, approximately 10' in from touch line. We should end up with two rows of cones, forming a series of 10' grids.

For ease of description, we'll call the players in each group "Player 1," "Player 2" and "Player 3." Player 1 and Player 2 stand behind one cone, facing the other cone. Player 3 stands behind the other cone, facing Players 1 and 2.

The goal is for Player 1 to dribble the ball to Player 3. When Player 1 reaches Player 3, Player 1 stops the ball by putting a foot on top of the ball and trapping it. Then Player 3 dribbles the ball to Player 2 (once again stopping the ball by trapping it with the sole of the foot), and then Player 2 dribbles the ball to Player 3.

If everyone is comfortable with this, last three minutes are spent in a competition to see which group of three can get their soccer ball from cone to cone a total of 12 times. 5 second penalty after each mistake.

0:27 - 0:35

Pass the Ball & Join the Other Line

Benefits: Improved trapping, Improved passing, Learning to move to the ball, Learning to follow the ball after passing, improved fitness.

Description: Same set up as previous activity - two cones, three players, one ball. Player 1 passes the ball to Player 3, who tries to control the ball and pass it to Player 2 with just two touches. After making the pass, Player 1 runs and takes the place of Player 3.

When the ball reaches Player 2, Player 2 tries to control the ball and pass it to Player 3 with just two touches.

Last 5 minutes spent in competition to see which group can pass ball a total of 12 times. Note: Players must get behind the other cone after making a pass (ideally about 6' behind the cone), but then players should meet the ball in front of the cone.

Long Term Goal: Being able to easily switch between 1 touch, 2 touch and 3 touch passing while running through the ball.

0:36 - 0:46

Play the Ball the Way You Face

Benefits: Learning to show to the ball, ball carrier improves touch on the ball, improved fitness.

Description: In open field, break into groups of 3 or 4 players. One ball per group, each player has a number. Players line up much like previous activities (player 1 with the ball, facing player 3 who is about 10 yards away from player 1. Player 2 starts behind player 1) Player 1 starts with the ball and passes to player 3 and then follows the ball to get in line behind player 3. The only restriction is that players have to play the ball in the exact same direction as they were facing when they reached the ball, with no running around the ball. See which group can get the most consecutive passes with the ball always going in the direction the passing player is facing.

0:47 - 1:00
